Willem Dafoe: A Versatile Character Actor

Willem Dafoe was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, as the seventh of eight children.

He initially attended the University of Wisconsin's drama program but left to join the avant-garde "Theatre X" in Milwaukee. After two years of touring, he moved to Manhattan and became a member of the "Performance Group" in 1977.

He later founded the renowned "Wooster Group" with Elizabeth LeCompte.

Film Breakthrough

After numerous stage appearances, Dafoe made his film debut in Michael Cimino's "Heaven's Gate." He went on to star in Kathryn Bigelow's "The Loveless" as a biker poet and gained critical acclaim for his performance in William Friedkin's "To Live and Die in L.A." (1985).
