Biography of Nabopolassar

Nabopolassar, also known as Nabu-apal-usur, was the founder and first king of the Neo-Babylonian (or Babylonian-Chaldean) empire.

Born in the Chaldean region, Nabopolassar initially served in the military under the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal and rose to the rank of commander. After the death of Kandalanu, he was appointed as the governor of Babylon.

Rise to Power

In 626 BCE, an anti-Assyrian uprising began in Babylon.

Nabopolassar switched sides and joined the rebels. With the support of the Babylonian priesthood and the merchant-aristocratic class, he was proclaimed the king of Babylon on November 23, 626 BCE.
